The lake sailing threw up a real mix of conditions, but superb race strategy and performance from the pair of Duane Petertsen/Fayaad Shaik saw them take out 6 of the 7 race wins. Their 6th place in race 2 was discarded, giving them the opening event win by a 9 point advantage. Second to Amir Yaghya/Shane Joseph, who picked up the only other race win, and third to Musa Shongwe/Seun Africa.

Featuring a mix of boats, the Southern Charter Classic Series continues on 2018-2019 Southern Charter Classics - Event 2 at Theewater Sports Club on 1-2 December, concluding with Event 3 at Hermanus Yacht Club on 9-10 February 2019. Before then, the 2018 South African 420 National Championships takes place back at Zeekoevlei Yacht Club on 21-24 September 2018.

There is a resurgence of 420 Sailing in South Africa, encouraged very much by the success of the nation's sailors on the Olympic stage, particuarly Asenathi Jim/Roger Hudson of Team Race Ahead who competed in the 470 Men event at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.
