The final three races were sailed on Friday 8 January, with glorious sunshine being very welcome, after the past four days of record and constant rainfall.

In the end 10 of the 12 scheduled races were sailed, with two drops. A superb fleet of 34 teams saw a mix of seasoned 420 warriors joined by some “newbies” competing for the first time at a major event.

Nicholas Sharman/James Grogan showed pure genius on the race track, winning 6 of the 10 races to claim the 2016 Australian International 420 Championship in their steed, 'Azzurra'. Second overall to New Zealand’s Josh Berry/Henry Haslet on 31 points, and third to Nick Joel/ Hugo Lewellyn on 39 net points.

On the edge of stepping up to third overall were Sophie Macintosh/Emily Summerell, who finished 2nd in the final race, and finished just 1 point behind Joel/Lewellyn on 40 points. The pair claim the 2016 Australian International 420 Championship Female title.

Racing for the 420 fleet at the 2016 Australian Youth Championships starts on Monday 11 January, so get set for more racing from downunder.
