The winners were not decided until the final day of the 2017 Australian Youth Championship, held 10-14 January 2917 at Adeldaide Sailing Club.

Clearing skies and a shifty 12 to 15 knots concluded the 2017 Australian Youth Championships in South Australia. Following four days of intense racing the five youth classes completed all ten races and the top three podium places were awarded.

Having completed two races on the penultimate day, the 420 fleet finished their final two races in good time. Otto Henry (NSW) and Rome Featherstone (WA) took two bullets today to continue their winning streak and finished in first place for the boys 420 division. Otto and Rome said,

“We hadn’t had much training in the waves so this regatta has been great for our development. The event has been a lot of fun and there were a lot of boats here competing, which is great. We also didn’t have a coach so was great to have the support of our parents out there.”

Laura Harding and Eleanor Grimshaw (VIC) retained their week- long lead and took the win in the girls 420 division. The pair said,

“We’ve been training a lot so we’re pretty happy where we finished with a win overall for the girls (division). It was a hard last day on the water but we just tried to keep a top 10 result today to maintain a top 5 position overall, which we did.”

In addition to crowning the 2017 Australian Youth Champions, a selection of twelve athletes were announced as the newest members of the Australian Sailing Youth Team; these athletes will represent Australia in the 2017 World Sailing Youth Championships. Congratulations to Otto and Henry and Laura and Eleanor who will hold the honour of representing their nation. The final two team athletes in the Nacra 15 class will be selected at a separate event in April this year.
