The stunning beach venue of Sesimbra delivered a perfect opening day of racing at the 2018 420/70 Junior European Championships, with a shifty breeze of 11-15 knots gusting up to 20 knots, sparkling blue sea and wall to wall sunshine.

Racing got underway around 1400 hours for the four Classes, with two races for each of 420 Open, 420 U17, 470 Men and 470 Women, in a line-up featuring rookies alongside some of the legends of junior 420/470 sailing.

Racing continues on Saturday 7 July, with a scheduled start time at 1400 hours and three races for the 470 and 2 for the 420.

420
The 98-boat 420 Open teams are split into two fleets, yellow and blue, for the six race qualification series, with re-seeding each day based on that day’s leaderboard. The leading 49 teams after six races will advance to gold fleet racing, and the other half of the fleet will continue in silver fleet.

Hitting the race track with an outstanding performance in the yellow fleet were Martín Wizner Pérez-Lafuente/Pedro Ameneiro Amezaga (ESP), with back to back wins to take the day 1 lead. In the blue fleet, the current British Youth Sailing Champions, Niamh Harper/Ross Thompson (GBR) had the most consistent scorecard, with a 2,2 and sit on tiebreak in second overall with Florian Buscher/Maximilian Buscher (GER), who matched their results in the yellow fleet.

The 2017 U17 Junior European Champions, Demetrio SPOSATO/Gabriele CENTRONE (ITA), are now contesting the under-19 age group in the Open fleet, but struggled in the opening race scoring 21. They swiftly escalated through the fleet in race 2 to wrap up their opening day with a 5th place and a 20th leader board position.

Men, Women and Mixed teams are all racing in the Open fleet, with separate titles awarded to Men/Mixed and Women. In 12th overall, Vita Heathcote/Milly Boyle (GBR) are the top placed women, with Greece’s Ariadni-Paraskevi Spanaki/Myrto Papadopoulou next up in 17th overall. Last year, the Greek pair finished 2nd overall in the U17 fleet to win the U17 Women’s title. Third placed women’s team are France’s Clara Olive/Solenza Mariani in 21st overall.

In a special connection between the world’s best 470 sailors and the young crop of talent in the 420 and 470 fleets, caps signed by the world’s best are being given at the daily post-race briefings run by Nikos Drougkas (GRE). The caps are being presented for race track achievements, and the aim is to connect the current stars in the 470 Class with the younger generation and establish an ongoing link-up between the experienced and younger teams.

470
The 470 Men and Women fleets are racing an 11 race series, to decide the top ten who will advance to the Medal Race.

In the 470 Men, Israel’s Nitai Hasson/Tal Harari did the double, winning both races convincingly, with team mates Maor Abu/Yoav Rooz in second overall. Hungary’s brothers Balázs Gyapjas/Zsombor Gyapjas stake out third place.

Last year, Antoni Massanet won the 420 Junior Europeans as helm, and this year returns to the Championship in the 470 as crew for his friend, Albert Torres. Both hugely experienced in the 420, they only stepped into the 470 together three days ago, after Massanet received a call from Torres inviting him.

“Today in the first race, it was so difficult for us,” explained Massanet. “The 470 is a very different boat, as you have to be stronger and faster, and everything goes quicker. We enjoyed a lot the races and we can do our best over the next days.”

470 Men - Results after 2 Races

Theresa Löffler/Lena Stückl won the 470 Women opening race, then a 3rd to lead the women’s fleet overall. They sit on 3 points over Paola Amar/Marine Riou (FRA), with German sisters Luise Wanser/Helena Wanser in third.

“It is really nice here on the beach,” commented Theresa about the venue. “Outside on the race track though it is completely shifty and difficult. I like it but I think it is going to be really tricky.

“We are very happy with our results, and we didn’t expect that actually,” added Stuckl. “It felt easy to take the win , as we had a quite good feeling today, and we felt the shifts and the gusts quite good.

“It is very, very shifty and I think everyone thought it only worked on the right side, but sometimes you also gained over on the left side. Yeh, you have to go quite extreme sometimes and be quite brave, and it is not one system.”

There is plenty of talent in the 470 fleet, and as new conditions unfold tomorrow, we can expect other faces finding their stride out on the race track.
