Sixty One 420s Turn Out for first ever Carnival Race
Yacht Club Sanremo in Italy hosted the first ever Carnival Race from 20-22 February as part of their preparations to host the 2016 420 World Championships next year.
There was no stopping reigning 420 Ladies World Champions Carlotta Omari/Francesca Russo Cirillo (ITA) who quite simply outpaced the rest of the 61 boat 420 fleet over the 6 races.
Racing got underway on Friday 20 February, with glorious sun and a westerly breeze and three races. Omari/Russo cirillo notched up back to back wins and a second place, remarkably consistency in some challenging conditions.From that point, there was only one team still in touch with them, Maxime Pedron/Michael Eliott from France, who won the third race of the day to add to their 5,11 scores.In third were Matteo Omari/Cecilia Fedel from scores of 19,5,4.
All change in the weather on day 2, as Saturday was dominated by a rain filled sky, which kept the wind away and the sailors off the race course. So, instead the highlight of the day was the Carnival Party hosted in the evening at the Aregai Marina Hotel.
The weather cleared for Sunday’s final day, with a bright blue sky and breeze of 8-13 knots. Omari/Russo Cirillo again dominated the fleet in the day's three races with a 2,1,2. Sticking close to them, but not quite close enough were Pedron/Eliott who scored 6,2,4 to finish in second overall, and with a 9 point deficit. Sweeping up the leaderboard from 7th to 3rd were Edoardo Ferraro/Francesco Orlando from solid results of 5,1,4.
Sixty-one teams from Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Russia and Switzerland took part. The depth of talent in the fleet was extensive, with seventeen different teams claiming a finish in the top 5.
