The GBR (RYA) Youth Championships & (ISAF) Trials concluded on Friday at Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli SC in Wales. Ben Saxton & David de Boltz are GBR 420 Youth Champions and Imogen Stanley & Kate Macgregor are the Women’s Champions.

It was a close thing, with Owain Matthews and Ben’s brother, Tim a point behind after the final race. And strong challenges had been mounted throughout the week by Phil Sparks & Ben Gratton, at their first Youth Championships, and by James Rusden & Joe Williams. Imogen Stanley & Kate Macgregor, bronze winners at last year’s Junior Europeans, had an enormous lead of 68 points over their next rivals in the women’s competition, helmed by Imogen’s younger sister. Karenza Morton’s Report on the whole event, which is the annual selection trial for the GBR team for the ISAF Youth Worlds is attached.

The GBR 420 Class was also celebrating the selections for the double-handed dinghy at the ISAF Youths. Of the 29er fleet of nearly 40 boats, the top four performing helms were all current or former 420 Class members. Both experienced 420 sailors, Frances Peters & Claire Lasko, who were 2nd overall, will be GBRs womens representatives at the ISAFs, and Frances’ younger brother, James. who helmed the winning boat at the Championships, will also be going to the ISAFs. Watch out in 420s in 2009!
