420 WOMEN
Two-time medallists at the Youth Sailing World Championships, Violette Dorange/Camille Orion briefly stepped in to the lead after winning race 3, but after following through with a 21st finish in race 4, dropped to 4th.

Strong and steady is the aim, and Spain’s Patricia Reino/Isabel Laisesca today added results of 3,2 to their top 5 scorecard to advance into the lead, by 5 points over Clara Olive/Solenza Mariani (FRA).

All other teams, apart from the French leaders hold double-digit discards, giving Reino/ Laisesca room to manoeuvre in the days ahead. Reino won the women’s fleet in last year’s Junior Europeans, although with a different crew, so is well familiar with the pressure of front of fleet racing. Third to team mates Laura Akrich/Clara Llabrés (ESP), with Llabrés herself no stranger to success, finishing as 2nd women’s team at the 2017 420 Europeans

An escalation on form from the USA’s Michelle Lahrkamp/Gabriella Del Bello who won race 4 and with it closed the points gap to the teams ahead.

10. Carmen LOSANTOS PULIDO/Carlota HOPKINS GUERRA (ESP 55856) 36 pts

420 OPEN
New Zealand’s Seb Menzies/Blake McGlashan had the second best performance across the 73 boat 420 Open fleet, scoring 1,3 in the blue fleet to move into the lead. Over in the yellow fleet, it was the USA’s Thomas Hall/Sam Gavula who optimized the race track best to secure results of 1,2 and upgrade themselves to 6th overall.

Spain’s Luis Miguel Hernández/Ignacio Balaguer hold firm in second overall, whilst the overnight series leaders Alessandro Caldari/Federico Caldari (ITA) drop to third.

9. Francisco MOURÃO/Luís PINHEIRO (POR 55328) 15 pts
10. Dylan ASCENCIOS/William GEORGE (USA 55917) 19 pts

420 U17
Jacobo García/Antoni Ripoll (ESP) take over from team mates Marina Garau/Blanca Cabot to control the U17 fleet, despite scores of 24, 6 from the day’s two races. Fortunately the discard removed their 24th from counting, but this pair cannot afford to make another mid-fleet finish. Garau/Cabot drop to third.

Moving up to second are Greece’s star partnership of Melina Pappa/Maria Tsamopoulou, who launch their Championship assault fresh from winning the U17 Women title at last month’s 420 Junior Europeans in Portugal. Last year they also got silver medals in the U17 Women at both the Junior Europeans and European Championship, so know what it takes to stay calm under pressure and sail their way to a podium finish.
