"... there is just so much enthusiasm about developing the 420 Class in the Oceania region ..."

The day kicked off at 0830 hours in the classroom to discuss boat handling, review the exercises from the previous two days, before focusing on starting technique and the Racing Rules of Sailing. Then on to the water with nine 420s and plenty of ribs for the coaches to put the theory into practice.

The afternoon was spent back ashore, with lectures and knowledge sharing, before the presentation of Certificates of Participation to all the coaches and sailors. Plaques were also presented to the Takapuna Boating Club and local organizers, inculding the Oceania Sailing Federation, as thanks and recognition of the support and organization for the Clinic.

As well as a strong New Zealand representation, participants have flown in to join the Clinic from Australia, Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa, Singapore and the Solomon Islands. The aim of the clinic has been to develop technical, tactical, sailing and organizational skills, as well as training information. The boost to 420 sailing and the broader development of sailing across Oceania was summed up by John Tierney, Secretary General of the Oceania Sailing Federation who in thanking the 420 Class for holding the Clinic said, "The results are fantastic and I am sure you have set us on our path for development. There is just so much enthusiasm about developing the 420 Class in the Oceania region and we are very, very thankful for what the International Class has done, and it is the beginning I think of a great period of the development of sailing in Oceania."

Jose Massapina, 420 Class Vice-President for Development added, "The 420 Class has always invested in the future of sailing, and we ensure our clinics and development programmes leave a strong and viable legacy, It has been hugely exciting here at the Oceania Clinic to meet the many talented and enthusiastic sailors who will now go on to share their experience and new skills within their national networks. On behalf of the International 420 Class Association, thank you to all and the 420 Class is committed to providing ongoing support in the pursuit of developing sailors in Oceania."

As the primary individuals tasked with developing athletes and helping them achieve their goals coaches at each level of sailing need to be multi-skilled to be successfu, and the 420 Class Clinic has helped to fast-track the knowledge acquisition. From 3-7 October 2018, the International 420 Class Association is running a High Level Coaches Clinic in Vilamoura, Portugal and registration is open. Find out more ...

Take a listen of the feedback we received from Coaches and Sailors on the positive difference the clinic has made to them.

45 Coaches and Sailors are at the High Level Clinic learning from one of the world's best 420 Coaches, Nikos Drougkas. Once the clinic concludes on Monday 30 April, there will be one more day of the Basic Level Clinic on 1 May 2018, before World Sailing's annual Development Symposium gets underway from 2-4 May to share and discuss training and development initiatives,

Prior to the High Level Clinic, the 420 Class ran a Basic Level Clinic to share less advanced training knowledge and skills.

The 420 Class is delivering a package of 420 Class Development Programmes in 2018, which kicked off in the Bahamas, 15-18 March 2018.

The International 420 Class Association has always been at the forefront of running development programmes and sharing sailing knowledge, skills and techniques for sailors and coaches through online platforms, such as 420 to the Max and the 420 Exercise e-Book, as well as our development clinics and initiatives around the world.
