The GBR 420 Fleet, joined by half a dozen Irish 420s using the event as part of their ISAF Youth selection process, raced at the 2012 Olympic venue, Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy on Portland Harbour last weekend. For most of the 55 teams, apart from the Irish and some of the newest to the boat (and a stray 470 team who were hoping to show the young firebrands the way!), this was the first of a gruelling series of events and races that will culminate at the beginning of May with selection of the GBR teams to go to Haifa for the Worlds and La Rochelle for the Junior Europeans.

The Winter Champions are Joanna Freeman & Hannah Mitchell (they were 12th at last year’s Worlds on Garda), with a 6 point lead over Mike Wood & Hugh Brayshaw, who in turn put 14 points between themselves and James Hayward & Tim Carter in 3rd. 2007 Junior European champion helm, Tom Gillard & 2009 Ladies’ champion crew, Rosie Sibthorp were 4th, while Matt Mee & Ian Dobson forsook their 470 for the weekend to get some big start experience before heading off to the Princess Sofia in Palma, and finished 5th.

The event was held at WPNSA on Portland Harbour, and further information and news may be found on the GBR 420 website; click here for the results of the Championship and the Selection Series so far. The next event, new this year, will be the week long RYA Youth Championships next month (when the GBR teams for the ISAF Youth Worlds will also be selected).
