Chile Wins 420 South American Championships
A phenomenal win for Chile’s Nadja Horwitz/Carmina Malsch who won the 420 South American Championships, taking place as part of the Semana de Buenos Aires 2013, with a 17 point margin over Tiago Brito/Andrei Kneipp from Brazil.
Raced over two weekends, 5-6 October and 12-13 October, the 420 South American Championships were contested by 32 teams from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Horwitz/Malsch had struggled to find consistency over the first weekend of racing with some up and down scores positioning them in third overall after 6 races, and just 2 points off the series leaders Agustin ROMERO/Felipe DINIZ, with this year’s 420 Boys ISAF Youth Sailing World Champions Brito/Kneipp in second.
But this second weekend, the race track belonged to the girls as they racked up multiple wins to extend their lead and seal victory with a significant 17 point margin over Brito/Kneipp. Strong winds and big waves on Saturday’s racing only pushed the partnership forwards with three second places, before they upped their game even further on Sunday to claim a hat track of wins.
Moving up to claim third overall were Christian Duhalde/Brian Zon from Argentina.

Horwitz has enjoyed another phenomenal year, as she has switched between 420 and 470 racing, all part of her campaign towards Rio 2016. Last year, Horwitz secured the silver medal at the 420 World Championships, with then crew Sofia Middleton, following up with a 4th place at this year’s 420 Worlds with Malsch. Before the 420 Worlds, the pair claimed a silver medal at the Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Cyprus. In the 470, Horwitz partnered up with former Olympian and now her coach Consuelo Monsegur and finished 29th at the 470 Europeans in Italy, and then jumped into a 470 with Bregona Gumucio at the 470 Worlds, finishing in 36th.
To wrap up her 420 season with Malsch by winning the 420 South Americans is a fantastic climax to a great year.
The International 420 Class ran a 420 South American Development Clinic between the two weekends of the 420 South Americans, led by 420 appointed coach Nickos Drougkas.
