Asenathi Jim from Red Hill & Marlon Jones from Ocean View, both of Izivunguvungu-MSC Foundation for Youth are National 420 Champions in South Africa for a second year running. The second National Championship for the brand new RSA 420 Class was held at the SAS Western Cape Championships 2008 at Hoedjiesbaai Beach, Saldanha Bay and was organised by Zeekoevlei YC.

Asenathi & Marlon completed the challenging 12 race series on 15 points, 13 ahead of their next rivals and 6 bullets to their names! But they did not have it totally their way. Ashwynn Daniels and Denzio Davids, fellow members of the Izivunguvungu Sailing School, took the silver step on the podium on 28 points and took a 1st in R10. Two points behind overall were father and son team, Paul and Jean Jacques Gorremans of Zeekoevlei YC, who had three bullets, but made the bronze slot on countback from Kenwyn Daniels & Joweal Klaase, again members of Team Izivunguvungu.

Fellow former Optimist sailors, who have recently teamed up and put in some competition practice at Hermanus in January, Brevan Thompson & Callum Kilpin of ZVYC took fifth in the Championships. We are pleased to see Michael Kellett & Gabriel Bhala take 6th, a great improvement on their 12th last year. Meanwhile, the first Women, Carla Dyer & Bridget Clayton of the University of Cape Town YC, improved on last year too! When are we going to see you guys at an international event? Alison Thompson’s Event Report is attached.
