420 Sailors heading to ISAF Youth Worlds supported by Athlete Participation Programme (APP)

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) is pleased to announce that 28 young sailors from 17 nations have been approved to receive Athlete Participation Programme (APP) funding for the 2014 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship. Tavira, Portugal will play host to the 44th edition of the ISAF Youth Worlds from 12-19 July 2014, hosting over 350 sailors from 65 confirmed nations.

From the 28 competitors chosen to benefit from APP funding there will be 15 sailors in the Laser Radial Boys, six in the Laser Radial Girls, four in the 420 Boys, two in the RS:X Boys and one in the Open 29er.

One hundred and five nations have competed at the ISAF Youth Worlds across its 44 year history. Since 2002 APP funding has given over 200 sailors the opportunity to represent their nation at the premier regatta for youth sailors.

The list of attending nations continues to grow with Tanzania's APP funded Laser Radial sailor Sahala Imamu set to fly his country's flag for the first time in Portugal.

Of the 2014 recipients, the Youth Worlds welcomes back previous APP funded athletes Nicole Paul (COL), Velick Manhica (MOZ), Carlos Schauman (PAR) and Alberto Lados (URU).

APP sailors will benefit from subsidised entry, travel and the coaching of Hugh Styles, World Youth Sailing Trust coach, who will guide the athletes.

How It Works
The Athlete Participation Programme allows athletes, via their MNA, to apply for support in a number of different ways:

Event Coaching/Support - Athletes who attend the event without a coach or team leader can apply for coaching support. Coaching is provided by the World Youth Sailing Trust.

Entry Fee Subsidy - Applicants can apply for help with the entry fee. They can either ask for help with the whole amount or part of the cost of the entry fee.

Travel Subsidy - To assist in covering the expenses of the athlete's travel, they can apply for a Travel Subsidy to cover either part or the entire cost of their travel.
