Earlier today Ed. wrote: “It looks as though, with 30-odd more entries this year (194 boats) and probably more from more countries, including many from outside Europe, Kieler Woche 2010 has been huge for 420s......” Well, our man on the Jury, Class Secretary, Pedro Rodrigues reports (from some airport WiFi on his way home to Tavira): “Coming back from Kiel week, I have to report that the 420 class was the biggest class, with about 200 entries, and the most international in the international part, with 22 countries and 4 continents: FRA, ESP, SIN, GER, HUN, NED, ISV, GBR, IRL, AUT, USA, CZE, POR, KOR, SWE, DEN, AUS, NZL, ITA, POL, SUI and BEL (well, what the Jury says has to be right!).

This must be a positive indication of what is to come at the World Championships in Haifa and the Junior Europeans in La Rochelle. Certainly the SINs and a full-on challenge from Team France, in this our 50th anniversary year, together with some strong performances from both experienced and newer teams, at Kiel gives confidence that there will be close competition.

Justin & Sherman are back – they won the event (if not the title) at the Junior Europeans in Medemblik back in 2007. Their bronze appearance at Kiel last year was in preparation for the ISAF Youth Champs, but we have not seen them at the Worlds in the last two years. They seem to have thrown down the challenge, guys! See you in Haifa!
