420 CLASS INSPIRES OPTIMIST SAILORS AT LAKE GARDA EASTER REGATTA
As part of its annual Development Programme, the 420 Class headed to Italy for the iconic Lake Garda Optimist Easter Regatta.
Hosted at Fraglia Vela Riva, from 18-21 April, this year almost 1,000 young sailors from around the world competed. When ashore sailors could experience what will hopefully become the next choice of boat for many, with a fully rigged 420 on display in the boat park.
The aim of the 420 Class is to give Optimist sailors the opportunity to get up close to the 420, get to know more about the two-person dinghy experience, try out the new sensation of trapezing, get a feeling of the speed and challenge of three-sail sailing, as well as finding out more about the class. Moving from the Optimist to the 420 is a natural pathway choice, with the 420 taking sailors’ skills to the next level.
Always a favourite were the give aways, with the lycra neck puffs proving particularly popular in the swag department.
For two days, the on-site 420 Class representative Mika Massapina chatted to numerous sailors, parents and coaches, sharing information about the boat, opportunities the 420 offers and role of the International 420 Class Association in supporting the class. Sailors could get in the boat, have a go trapezing and get a first taste of the fun of 420 sailing.
Sailors from the following nations took part in the Easter Regatta at Fraglia Vela Riva: Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cayman Islands, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, FrANCE, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turks and Caicos, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, USA, US Virgin Islands.
