2013 British 420 Winter Championships

Forty teams were on the start line for the 2013 British 420 Winter Championships, hosted in Weymouth over the weekend of 23 March.

The 420 Winter Championships was also the first of three “International Selection” events to determine the teams which will represent Great Britain at the 2013 420 World and Ladies World Championships in Valencia, Spain from 22-30 July and the 2013 420 Junior European Championships in Pwllheli, Great Britain from 14-22 August.

A predominantly British line-up with four Irish boats joining the fleet enjoyed some blustery conditions out on the water. With gusts up to 25 knots on Sunday, teams were put through their paces with a fair few teams forced to retire. But for those at the front of the pack, they enjoyed punching their way upwind at an average 9 knots speed.

Neil Marsden/Matt Wallis were on top of the leaderboard from start to finish, claiming two race wins in the four races series with finishes of 5,3 sandwiched in between their victories.

The series didn’t start quite as planned for the other two teams joining Marsden/Wallis on the podium, with both scoring in the teens in race 1. Second place finishers Tim Riley/Luke Burywood were buried half-way down the fleet to take a 20th in race 1, before upping their game to post an all top-three scorecard thereafter. For the third overall pair of Callum Airlie/Joe Butterworth, they also had a challenging opening to the series, before turning the table on their race 1 score and go on to place an all top 5 series.

Top girls’ team were Annabel Cattermol/Bryony Bennett Lloyd who finished in 5th overall.

From Weymouth, the next two events in the International Selection are the RYA Youth Nationals at Largs from 31 March-5 April 2013 and then the 420 Spring Championships in Pwllheli from 20-21 April 2013.
